Humberto Carbonell is thrilled with his L&L prize (it even had stickers for his sons Zion and Zarrius) earned during the opening of Kauai Ocean Discovery at Kukui Grove Center.

Maili Ornellas, a distance learning candidate through Kauai Community College, has George (he’s even got his own student ID!) in tow during the first days of the spring semester.

Nine-month-old Kalawaia Fagarang-Sunn is ready to be the youngest basketball official Wednesday night during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball games at Kauai High.

Lenny Rapozo, one of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation basketball referees, could not help but notice 9-month-old Kalawaia Fagarang-Sunn (grandpa Neil Fagarang said Kalawaia’s grandma was the late pro surfer Rell Sunn!), who was securely bundled behind the officials’ table at the Wednesday night KIF girls basketball games. Lenny said he’s recruiting Kalawaia to help build the officials base (yes, they need help getting more officials!).

Sam Henriques — she’s one of the Kapaa High School trainers — doesn’t limit her help to student-athletes. She (yep, she was on duty during the Monday night games) talked about rain rot that led to the meeting of Shido, one of the newest members of the Healing Horses stable, that is afflicted with the anaerobic bacterial disease caused by being unsheltered during all that rain we’ve been having since Christmas when Shido and the rest of his seven-horse family lost their shelters that blew away in the wind. Karin Stoll and Healing Horses need help getting new covers for Shido and his equine family.

Congratulations to Humberto Carbonell who was one of six winners in random drawings during opening activities of the Kauai Ocean Discovery center (they’re still quite busy) at Kukui Grove Center (they’ve got the Girl Scout Cookie Rally Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where cookie-tasting is one of the events scheduled!). Melissa McFerrin-Warrack extended the 2020 sign contest (congratulations to Samara Villasenor and Shaylyn Kiger, who were two of the social media contest winners!) until the start of the Kauai Ocean Fest Friday, Feb. 7.
