LIHUE — The launch of October being filled with spooky happenings, and the start of the Department of Education’s fall break brought the crowds to the Kukui Grove Center starting Friday evening with the launch of Freaky Fridays by the Aloha Dance Studio.
Jim Jung and Grace Delos Reyes headed an effort by the Agency on Elderly Affairs, Retired Senior Volunteer Program to provide storytime for keiki and their families frequenting the Keiki Korner play area on Saturdays.
“We have some exciting center events coming up during the fall break week that runs Oct. 5 through 13,” said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack, Kukui Grove assistant manager.
Hosted through a grant by the Family Hui and the Hawaii Children’s Action Network, a Family Fun Day targeted for youngsters 8 years and under filled the area surrounding the Keiki Korner play area.
Hale ‘Opio will take the notch up another level Friday for a Bully Free Concert and Youth Resource Fair from 5 to 9 p.m. in the center stage and food court area.
With a youth focus and a special emphasis on tweens and teens, the Bully Free Concert opens with a set by Kauai Kollab followed by speakers from the Resilience Project and TyRoots.
Andria Tupola will be the keynote speaker followed by a Poetry Slam headed by Kiki Faford leading to performances from Hui ‘O Holomua, the Kid Fit Crew, and Bandwagon Kauai.
Participating agencies include the Kauai Family Guidance Center, Alu Like, Keiki to Career program, Hale ‘Opio, the Department of Health, Kekua Aloha Foundation, and Kamehameha Schools.
Programming then returns to the month of spooky October happenings, Spooktacular Saturday with a Small Fry Slime Party from 2 until 5 p.m. where pre-registration is a must. The Glow Show puppets perform from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Living Dead shows start at 5:30 p.m.
