Special Olympic Kauai athlete Anara Coon has time for a breath between orders of Punalu‘u Sweet Bread during the Special Olympics bowling tournament at Kauai Bowl at Rice Shopping Center Saturday.

Thomas Labanon of CNT Hobbies relishes the comic book collection dropped off by a Kukui Grove Center shopper Saturday during the comic and collectibles swap coordinated by Bubbah’s Toy Box as part of the mall’s Spooktacular Saturdays in October.

Who would think that popcorn (it’s the gourmet kine!) would go with comic books and other collectibles, but Sumiko’s was doing a thriving business Saturday when Kukui Grove Center hosted a Spooktacular Saturday comic and collectibles swap coordinated by Bubbah’s Toy Box…the Cantu family (how is Annette Hashimoto connected with them?) took the opportunity to promote their “Haunted Yard” on Oct. 31 (scares start at dark with Disney villians as the theme, and continue until 10 p.m.), and Thomas Labanon was in seventh heaven when a shopper dropped off a load (he trolleyed the boxes on a skateboard) of comics that contained a chunk of Marvel copies as well as a good chunk of DC comics (did Captain America get to see those?).

More spooky fun is on tap Saturday when Small Fries coordinates a Slime Party (yes, you do need to pre-register) in the afternoon (are we going to have Movies in the Mall again?)

Kudos to Amy Scott and Eat Your Heart Out! on its initial appearance at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College with its line of salads (Elvrine Chow was already digging into the curry carrot daikon salad — it’s vegan and gluten free, Jessica Else!), and how did Mary Williamson score one of those HIjoe (when do they take a break to “assess” the program) shirts?

Kudos to the East Kauai Lions Club on a successful spaghetti lunch (Stephen Fujii — he’s the perennial numbers cruncher — said they went through more than 600 plates — and Kelvin Moniz was worrying about the servers giving too much.
