LIHUE — The Live Poets Society encourages students grades five to 12 to enter its first student poem contest — “From A Bird’s Eye”— open for entries until Wednesday, Oct. 2.
The LPS also encourages English/language arts, science, environmental and Hawaiian studies teachers of these levels to use the built-in lesson plan for the “Bird’s Eye” competition and schedule a visit from a wildlife volunteer to stimulate interest and thought about Kauai birds.
It includes awards, prizes, publication and an invitation to read with LPS members in a public program on Nov. 6.
LPS is also calling all poets to its Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m. meeting at the Lihue Public Library. The writing prompt is the same as LPS’ first student poem contest. Participants should bring 10 copies of poem drafts or completed poems to share, and writing materials.
The Kauai LPS is a gathering of poets who meet to enjoy poetry and the process of writing poems together under the guidance of Kauai poet and author and The Garden Island columnist Dawn Fraser Kawahara, in partnership with the Lihue Public Library.
The group meets monthly at 6:30 p.m., usually the first Monday of each month, in the library conference room. Visiting poets and poetry=lovers are welcome.
