Injured hiker rescued

HANAKAPIAI — Firefighters responded to a call of a male hiker in distress Tuesday afternoon near Hanakapiai Falls.

Fire personnel were notified shortly before noon of a 39-year-old male visitor who sustained a leg injury while hiking near the falls. Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 were dispatched to the area.

Once on scene, rescuers located the injured man and short-hauled him to a nearby landing zone. He was then airlifted to Princeville Airport where he was assessed and treated by awaiting medics.

    This is about my husband. He’s getting ready for surgery right now. Three broken bones that are going to require some hardware. Everyone here from the rescue to the medical treatment had been absolutely amazing and we appreciate it!
