LIHUE The Island Comfort air conditioning unit arrived in the nick of time as Lihue tied another high-temperature record at 89 degrees earlier this week at the Boys &Girls Club Lihue Clubhouse.
LIHUE — The Island Comfort air conditioning unit arrived in the nick of time as Lihue tied another high-temperature record at 89 degrees earlier this week at the Boys &Girls Club Lihue Clubhouse.
“They’re setting everything up today,” said Tina Albao, Boys &Girls Club Kauai director. “The team is working on it, and by the time the kids get here after school, the room should already be cooling down.”
Ken Starr, Mark McMains, Eric and Mimi Santillan, Guido Schenk and Josiah and Noah Starr — all representing Island Comfort — arrived with cartons of new water bottles that welcomed the students who turned out following a hot day at school.
The Island Comfort team led boy and girls on a tour of the teen center, where the donated air conditioning units were installed and operating, as the throng of students converged in the shaded, picnic-table area.
“We’re glad to do this,” Ken Starr said of the donated air conditioning units valued at $20,000. “Last month we donated a unit to the Poipu Beach Athletic Club, and for September, we’re air conditioning the Olelo Christian Academy on Rice Street in Lihue. This helps the community.”
Albao said the air conditioning was installed in the Boys &Girls Club Lihue teen center that was only recently completed through the volunteer help of a mainland corporation. The center that recently hosted the inaugural violin recital is primarily used by students in middle school, Albao said.

You’re a good man, Ken Starr. What a thoughtful thing to do for the various communities you’ve been helping—to bring the gift of cool air during this hottest of summers. It happens that Ken and his crew of professionals do an excellent (and speedy) job of installing and maintaining the systems they sell, too.
