A page from one of Marco Engquit’s photo albums shows everything from Kalalau to Kokee. He has thousands of polaroids in buckets and tubs and boxes and books archived in the heaps of international clutter that fill his home near the Hanapepe River. This album contains a selection of shots he took starting in Minnesota and ending in Kalalau. He writes his own captions.

Marco Engquist is a paramedic. He came to Kauai over four decades ago, and spent his first year on the island naked in a cave. He tells the story like this:
