HMSA honors 9 high schools, 15 students

HMSA recently celebrated Hawaii’s top high schools and the finest scholar athletes from across the state at the 2019 HMSA Kaimana Awards &Scholarship Program luncheon at the Hawaii Convention Center. School leaders, athletic directors, and family members attended the event to support these outstanding schools and students.

“We honor these young scholars, athletes, and community leaders whose achievements remind us that optimism and the simple act of helping others are what matter most,” said Michael Stollar, HMSA president and chief executive officer. “They’re making positive changes in the world and supporting them is a great way to create healthy communities.”

Kapaa High School was among the honorees.

HMSA has sponsored the Kaimana Awards &Scholarship Program in partnership with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association since 2005 to recognize all-around accomplishments by high schools and reward individual students with scholarships.

At the awards ceremony, 15 students each received scholarships worth $5,000. Nine high schools were recognized for achieving the highest program scores in their league (classified by enrollment) in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities, and sportsmanship. The nine highest-scoring schools received a check for $1,500.

HMSA Kaimana Awards &Scholarship Program 2018 student scholarship winners were Mayumi Fulgencio, Kauai High School and Tabitha Ross, Island School.
