Da Shadow: Kamalu Road drainage

w Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from “The Shadow” radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.

Kamalu Road, Wailua

Does the county have any plans to improve the drainage and ponding of rainwater along Kamalu Road? If so, what measures will need to be taken so flooding does not occur along roadsides?

The County of Kauai has a future project to construct improvements on Kamalu Road. The proposed improvements include resurfacing and reconstructing the pavement, replacing the existing one-lane bridge across Kalama Stream, shoulder widening where feasible, drainage improvements, guardrail installation and other safety improvements. This project is currently scheduled to occur no earlier than 2024.

Pothole reporting

Who should residents call to report potholes on county roadways? Does the county keep a log of all calls and locations received reporting potholes on county roadways?

To report potholes, the public may call the County of Kauai Department of Public Works, Roads Division, at 241-4847. The County of Kauai has a log of reports for potholes on County of Kauai roadways.
