Student hit by vehicle in Eleele

ELEELE — A student walking to school was injured Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle.

Police and firefighters responded to a report of a pedestrian crash on Kaumualii Highway in Eleele about 6:30, according to a County of Kauai press release.

A 12-year-old male was attempting to cross Kaumualii Highway at the intersection at Mahea Road when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle, the release said. The boy was not in a marked crosswalk at the time he was struck.

Hanapepe firefighters responded and found the boy responsive and being attended to by an off-duty firefighter.

The boy was treated and released at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.

This happened because the county is NOT taking any steps to repair the pedestrian bridge over the highway that allows students to cross the highway safely. This one’s on you, Kauai County. Quit making payoffs to your buddies and start using that money to keep our kids safe.

There is a crosswalk there but not on the area where School Kids cross. It is on the east side of the intersection of Mahea, Laulea, and Kaumualii Highway.
The bus stop is on the west side of that intersection. (wrong side)

A walk over pass should be built in that area and approx. a 100 yards below (another intersection) where school kids (high school and elementary) cross to get home.
