LIHUE — In an effort to curb illegal activities in public restrooms, the county Department of Parks and Recreation will begin a pilot program today to close comfort stations nightly at Kealia Kai, Kealia Beach Park and the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
“This pilot program will help us to eliminate continued acts of vandalism and other illegal activities that have been occurring at our park comfort stations, particularly during overnight hours,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami.
In 2018, there were 71 reported cases of vandalism — which included broken fixtures, damage to doors and walls, foreign objects in plumbing lines, and graffiti — in comfort stations at Kealia Kai, Kealia Beach Park, the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, and Lihi Park.
The Lihi Park comfort station is currently closed due to septic system repairs. Once it is operational, it will be added to the overnight closure list.
About time!!!! Wake the locals to take care of their children of all ages!!!
Curfew hours should be enforce with teens and younger children, too. It will help lower the problem of vandalism.
Have KPD Officers patrol the area more often.
