HANAPEPE — The Hanapepe-Eleele Hawaii Hazards Awareness and Resilience Program, in coordination with the Kauai Emergency Management Agency, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency and the Hawaii Department of Defense’s Hawaii National Guard is hosting a Kauai community disaster preparedness fair, Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hanapepe National Guard armory.
“This is going to be a big fair with resources available on how people can handle disasters in their communities,” said Jean Souza of the Hanapepe-Eleele HHARP. “This is for everyone, and will show what people can do, and help in the event of a disaster taking place in their community.”
To ensure all available resources are accessible to people to become aware of, the Hanapepe-Eleele HHARP is inviting vendors involved in disasters, or disaster response, to participate. Applications and more information is available by calling 353-1476.
Souza is joined by leaders of other organizations in encouraging people to be better prepared for disasters in their homes, businesses, schools and the community.
April was Tsunami Awareness Month. June 1 marks the start of the Hawaii hurricane season that runs through the end of November and, in September, National Preparedness Month is an annual campaign led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to encourage everyone to prepare for emergencies and disasters.
Some of the presentations that will be offered at the fair include “Caring for the Elderly in a Disaster,” “Home Improvements for High Wind: Continuous Load Path,” and “Emergency Preparedness for All Hazards.”
Among the hands-on demonstrations are radio communications during disasters by the radio amateur civil emergency service, and an American Medical Response ambulance will be on-site for inspection, demonstration and answering questions.
Among the list of exhibitors are HI-EMA, KEMA, Hawaii National Guard, Simpson Strong-Tie, county Agency on Elderly Affairs, and more.
