Kuhio repair work continues

LIHUE – Ongoing emergency slope stabilization on Kuhio Highway (Route 560) at mile marker 1 on the hill leading to Hanalei Bridge continues today. Crews closed the Hanalei bound lane of the highway at mile marker 1 on Saturday in response to a rock slide.

Kuhio Highway in this location is currently limited to one lane. Traffic is allowed in both directions with alternating traffic control.

Work on the slope Sunday ncluded removal of a large tree that had been cracked by the falling rocks and rock scaling. During the emergency work, flagmen may temporarily stop traffic to prevent passing vehicles from being hit by the loose material being scaled from the slope.

The Hanalei bound lane was closed overnight with flagmen present to direct traffic. Crews returned at 7 a.m. today to complete the slope stabilization. Stoppages of traffic in both directions will continue tomorrow and may last between 30-40 minutes during the rock scaling operations.
