KAPAA — Mason Buick was the sole Kapaa High School boy to win his match, Saturday when the Kauai Interscholastic Federation inaugurated play on the new basketball/tennis courts located adjacent to the Ron Martin baseball diamond.
Buick, playing on the Boys First Singles court, defeated Waimea’s Wendell Batangan, 6-1, 6-2.
The Menehune claimed the remaining boys’ matches starting with Alvin Rafael defeating Kapaa’s Ian Sotelo, 6-2, 6-1.
After picking up a win on a default on the Boys First Doubles, Waimea added to its wins when Wayne Noda and Vittorio Altomare teamed on the Boys Second Doubles court to control the Kapaa duo of Kaimani Dryer and Glenn Aguando, 6-1, 6-0.
Waimea’s Dylan Clarke and Jhames Ragus completed the Menehune men’s winning ways by taking the Kapaa pair of Nick Uribe and Carlos Ygov-Tapia, 6-2, 2-6, and 6-2.
Fans watching the Waimea girls take their series, 3-2, relished the shade being cast by the Kapaa High School locker rooms that offered protection while watching the matches taking place on the upper campus courts.
The pair of Kapaa wins came on the Girls Singles arena where Sidney Nice claimed the First Singles match over Waimea’s Louisa Tanigawa, 6-1, 6-1, and Warrior Kiara Dolino outlasted Waimea’s Braelynn Cayaban, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on the Girls Second Singles court.
Waimea claimed the three doubles matches when Leslie Uri paired with Kamalani Goo to best the Kapaa pair of Leila Nelson and Hannah Collins-Doijode, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on the Girls First Doubles floor.
The Menehune’s Julienne Gawaran and Rhona Lei Batacan were 6-4, 6-3 winners over Kapaa’s Mary Jane Uribe and Ruby Jane Udaundo on the Girls Second Doubles court, and Waimea wrapped up its final win on the Girls Third Doubles floor when Marian Medina paired with Keria Moritsugu Vandehey to get past the Warrior pair of Analani Bacon and Lexi Kenney, 1-6, 6-4, and 7-5.
The Kauai Interscholastic Federation next hosts the state qualifying matches starting Thursday and continuing through Friday at both the Kauai Community College tennis courts, and at the Timbers Kauai at Hokuala courts. Start time is 8 a.m. on both days.
