The reading and awards ceremony for Kauai Community College’s Na Leo Lele Creative Writing Contest is scheduled April 24. The ceremony is from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the KCC Learning Resource Center, room 124B. It is free and light pupus will be provided. The public is welcome.
“It can be a powerful experience for a writer to share his/her work directly with an audience, and we would love for members of the community to come out and support our student writers,” wrote Michael Pfau, KCC English instructor.
The contest, in its fourth year, is open to all KCC students. Na Leo Lele is Hawaiian for “the leaping voices.” There are three categories: poetry, short fiction, and short nonfiction.
A fiction and nonfiction entry is considered a single work that is no more that 3,000 words, and a poetry entry may include up to three separate pieces, totaling no more than 1,500 words. There will be first-, second-, and third-place winners in each category with cash awards of $100, $50, $25 respectively.
“For me, the significance of this contest is simple: it creates an opportunity for our community to show appreciation for the deep pool of creative talent we have on this island,” Pfau wrote. “In the sliver of an afternoon, we get to connect with nearly a dozen different artistic voices.”
