LIHUE — Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School media team was the sole recipient of a first-place honor among the five awards earned by Kauai schools at the 2019 Student Television Network Convention that wrapped up on March 31 in Seattle.
“The awards were pretty well spread out, this year,” said Kevin Matsunaga, CKMS media instructor. “Hawaii as a state earned 35 awards. This is five more than we (Hawaii) got previously.”
Kauai’s schools, including Island School and Kapaa Middle School, brought home five awards.
Topping the list of honors, the CKMS TV team secured gold in the Crazy 8s Broadcast News Magazine in the middle school division, the silver medal in the competition being awarded to another Hawaii school, Maui Waena Intermediate School.
The Island School middle school division team earned a second-place award in the Spot Feature competition, with the CKMS team getting a third place in the Movie Trailer for middle school division.
Kapaa Middle School teams earned a bronze in the Silent Film competition for middle school, and added an honorable mention in the Anchor Team for middle school.
