LIHUE — Police have arrested an Oahu man involved in a fatal traffic collision in Kapaa last week.
Llewellyn Hoopii, 39, was arrested Thursday and charged with suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide, a Kauai County spokesperson said Tuesday.
According to a Kauai Police Department press release, the SUV Hoopii was driving swerved into another vehicle while trying to pass, lost control and ran into a utility pole on Kuhio Highway around 9:45 p.m. Feb. 11.
The front passenger of the SUV Hoopii was driving — a 50-year-old man later identified as Nick Garza of Oahu, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Garza was presumed dead at the scene and later transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was formally pronounced dead, police said.
The KPD press release said Hoopii had to be extricated from the vehicle by responding firefighters and was transported by medics to Wilcox Hospital with critical injuries.
Hoopii has since been released from custody, pending police investigation.
