LIHUE — Even the elephant has a name, said Sharon Jacobs, one of the Kauai Quilt Show sitters Monday at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at the Kukui Grove Center.
“I don’t know who made the quilt that serves as a banner announcing the boutique,” Jacobs said. “But even the elephant has a name — it’s ‘Salee’ — like ‘Sale and e.’”
The boutique is a new facet of this year’s show that is ending today, and offers quilters and quilting enthusiasts handmade items.
“I had a quilt in the show, but it already sold and the buyer took it,” Jacobs said. “But there are still a lot of quilts to enjoy. We also have a good selection of donation quilts where the proceeds of the quilt sale goes 100 percent to a local nonprofit.”
In addition to the donation quilts, the boutique, viewers are also invited to vote for a People’s Choice.
Joanne Parongao was taking advantage of the President’s Day holiday to view the selections with her husband.
“There are about six retired teachers from Waimea High School who do this,” Parongao said. “We meet about once a month, and do quilts that we give to those who need. We were considering entering a quilt for this show, but you know how it is? We ran out of time. Maybe we’ll do one for the next show.”
Jacobs said there has been a lot of similar experiences from other viewers.
“There was a gentleman from the Big Island who heard about the show,” she said. “But he’s from the Big Island. He sent his children to view the show with the task of taking pictures so they could send to him.”
Cheryl Brady, one of the sitters, had not only her “Asian French Braid” available, she had quilts done by her grandchildren on exhibit as well.
Those quilts were also sold and taken, leaving the group to check out the grandchildren’s handiwork via photos on Brady’s phones.
Jacobs said activity has been pretty good with the bad weather giving people more reason to stop by and look over the numerous selections as well as talk story with many of the quilters who visit the gallery as show sitters.
“But time is running out for this year,” Jacobs said.
The show ends at 5 p.m.
The Kauai Quilt Show, with free admission, is sponsored by the Kukui Grove Center, the Kauai Quilt Guild, Nene Quilters, Vicky’s Fabric, Kapaia Stitchery, and Discount Fabric Warehouse.
