Kauai High School’s varsity girls soccer team placed third at the 2019 The Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer Championship–Division II state tournament.
Kauai High defeated island rival Kapaa High School, 4-1, in the third-place game Saturday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
Kaleonahe Bukoski scored two goals for the Red Raiders, and Seidree Kealoha-Albarado and Kehela Ventura each scored one, according to ScoringLive.
Taelyn Nunes scored for the Warriors.
“We were up actually, 1-0, early on a (penalty kick). So were were up, 1-0, but unfortunately had some slips,” said Kapaa head coach Andrea Alfiler. “Just the conditions of the field. Unfortunately, had some muddy moments where (goalkeeper Malia Alonzo) slipped in goal. Kauai High had some fun up there and got some beautiful-looking goals against us today.”
Kauai High ends its season with a 14-1 record, going an undefeated 12-0 in Kauai Interscholastic Federation play and 2-1 in the state tournament.
Kapaa finishes with a 8-6-2 record, going 6-4-2 in the KIF season and 2-2 at the state tournament to place fourth.
“These moments are precious in tournament play. We came in unseeded and had a great run,” Alfiler said. “So just a reminder to the seniors as well as the underclassmen, we don’t take these moments for granted. We’re thankful and pretty blessed to have been able to make a good run. Wasn’t able to get the W today, but it was a great run. We played on the (main) stadium field, which was definitely a treat. And congratulations to Kauai High for a great season and great tournament.”
Kauai head coach Auika Metcalfe couldn’t be reached for comment Saturday.
