Killing of animals isn’t necessary
Killing of animals isn’t necessary
During my Tuesday morning walk I approached the lovely verdant Kuamoo Nounou trailhead. Although I had recently read about it in TGI, I was still startled to see the warning sign for hikers posted near the bridge, detailing the fact that hunters were on the mountain daily using archery to kill wild pigs, or to use the signage euphemism, to “harvest” wild pigs. And how “polite” to recommend that hikers wear bright clothing!
Despite being an ingrained part of the culture, hunting is violence, no matter how you look at it. Until humans move past hunting and killing all forms of animals, including each other, we will not evolve to be a more-conscious, nonviolent species.
There is an abundance of nutritious and delicious plant-based food to go around to feed us and make the world a healthier environment.
And for our friends who are irritated by pigs rooting in their gardens, let’s be creative and think of clever, harmless ways to deter the pigs from entering our space in the first place.
Terri Donovan Mansfield, Kapaa
You are in luck Terri, I just read another article that one of the Mayor’s top goals is to transform the island of Kauai to a nutritious and delicious plant based diet. ( Think green waste to plate ) The law should be passed any day now.
I would expect that you were only wearing plant based clothing and that the plants grown and harvested were in a humane environment.
Is seafood ok?
I am sure there is a retired county council/senator that would be happy to help you out.
Terri, I think you’re being a little naive. This has nothing to do with humans being a violent species. You’ll get no argument from me there. The reason for removing as much of the feral pig population as possible is because they endanger many of the native plant species with their overgrazing. In addition, they chew at the bark of trees and devour valuable nutrients from the forest floor. I’ve read that the most destructive force in Kauai’s native forests—besides man—is the feral pig. They need to be eliminated, if at all possible.
Look, I understand your view, and, I too, have evolved somewhat. I try not to eat red meat, won’t eat veal or lamb, and usually don’t eat pork because pigs are intelligent animals. However, the reality remains that some living things should be controlled. Have you ever squashed a cockroach? A mosquito? Where do you draw the line? I respect your view but, realistically, some control or killing of some living “animals” must occur to keep things balanced. If you have an alternate solution, let’s hear it.
Why is it wrong to kill and eat animals, but fine to kill and eat plants? Plant life doesn’t matter? There is no shortage of animals that kill and eat other animals. Are you suggesting that the earth would be better off if all animals stopped eating all other animals? If not, then why should humans be the only animal to stop eating other animals? Your argument has no rationale … just a warm fuzzy feeling. It’s fine to base your own actions on warm fuzzies, but don’t use them as a justification for changing the behavior of your entire species.
Don’t like hunting… don’t hunt. Do some research on the damage to the ecology of Hawaii by pigs before making comments like this again. Or go get them yourself “Peacefully”
Kailua pig…yum! humans are omnivores and the feral pigs are certainly healthier to eat than factory produced hormone and antibiotic laden flesh. Definitely wear bright colors though.
And this comes from someone who’s business mission statement is: “We educate humans about our work with our nonviolent obedient-to-God ETI, Extraterrestrial Intelligence, from the contiguous universe whose mission is to work with our scientists to bring zero point energy here for the purpose of extending life on our fragile Earth.”
Yeah I’ll keep eating my lau-lau and you can keep talking to your alien friends.
As to harvesting pigs and all animals the Karma is not in the meat, it is mostly in the fat / lard / grease, that white stuff that some call the “flavor”…words passed down through generations, until they are accepted as truth, part of the family, being OK, and as a deepening rut in the road of life worn deep, and difficult to get out of.
You see the fat in meat when eaten by humans accumulates in human blood vessels. Fat is not water soluble, but blood vessels like arterial, venous, and lymphatic vessels are made to carry water soluble ingredients like red blood cells, water, oxygen, digested food, immune system cells, and so much more…but not animal grease. Animal grease and even vegetable oils stick to the blood vessel walls because those things are not water soluble and they accumulate until the vessel inside diameter is so narrowed your body organs and brain especially suffer…like strokes and high blood pressure, and organ failure due to accelerated organ degeneration from lack of oxygen from the lack or diminished blood flow.
Animal fat also has a large adherence attraction to the human heart muscle, so just like animal meat is muscle with the visible white fat in it, the human heart accumulates animal fat in and around the human heart muscle. The human heart contracts the heart about 70 times a minute for your entire life…what a work load…even while sleeping. It contracts to push blood out of the heart and into the vascular system to send blood to every part of the body.
If you go online and look up “fatty heart” it should open to some rather gross looking fatty hearts, yellow fat in fact…it should show a mostly red heart but alongside will be a grossed out yellow fatty heart probably from someone’s body who died of heart failure.
Eating animals is an accumulation problem, it takes 3 to 5 or 6 decades of eating animals in sliced, diced, sausaged, fried, BBQ’d, baked and raw form, etc.
Yep 3 to 6 decades and you too can have heart failure, or in the case of loading your arteries with grease you can clog those tubes up so that they close off in your brain and you have a stroke and turn into what is inappropriately called a “veggie” or vegetative state…like a coma, or can’t talk, or your arm or leg is numb and does not work.
If that is the case, the heart attack may be soon to follow.
Humans were just not designed for eating animal fat, at least not at the pace it is is sold in stores. Eating meat rarely, you should be able to survive, but dead at 50 and 60, well, life is a terrible thing to waste, and sad for your survivors.
It seems some can handle more meat and survive than others, but how can you tell…wait till your clock stops running?
Alternatively you can convert to a nutritional life style called Plant Based Nutrition, many people are seeing this as a way to a longer healthier active life.
Animal eating is so boring for the adventurous, you see there are only a few flavors available for the most part, especially at stores: cows, pigs, goat, lamb/sheep, chickens, well better to just say hoofed, clawed, finned, winged…about includes them all.
But if you explore through the food choices of Plant Based Nutrition there are thousands of varieties on earth, maybe not at your store, but worldwide and the finished product meals are endless as to variety and flavors and satisfaction, nutrition, endurance, longevity, energy, happiness, and a nice body, without gut belly.
Go ahead, chancem, Plant Based Nutrition, it’s online, and you’ll find you won’t need to go to the doctor and take those bizaar chemicals with all those detrimental side effects.
Bon Voyage,
Charlie
True Carnivores have fanged teeth to tear flesh off of the bones of animals, And claws to rip open the hide of animals to get to the flesh, their gastrointestinal tracts are are also evolved for meat being only as long as their bodies and have high dosages of flesh digestive enzymes especially hydrochloric acid for protein breakdown into amino acids.
Herbivores do not have fanged teeth for tearing raw flesh, and no claws to tear open the hides of wild animals to get to the raw flesh, and herbivores, like humans, have incredible Gastrointestinal Tracts filled with multiple digestive zones being about 22 feet long or longer in only 5’ to 6’ humans. Let’s see are they still called the stomach, and the small intestines’ Ilium, duodenum, jejunum…not necessarily in that order,,or correct name, and of course the methane factory for global warming, the colon.
As well the digestive enzymes for herbivores are several in order to digest the many different diets and food of Plant Based Herbivores.
Herbivores actually begin digesting food in their mouths with the digestive enzyme Alpha Amylase.
Our herbivore cousins are giraffes, cattle, elephants, horses, wildebeests, and many many more large animals, say how about anteaters, are they carnivores…? Or ornithors…? Apparently to be a 2,000 pound, or bigger, animal. you do not need to eat meat.
However you do need to eat animal flesh, meat, and it’s cofactors, fat-.lard-grease in order to be able to have high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.
So that is at least a few chronic degenerative disease side effects of a human carnivore or omnivore, and the only real benefit of meat eating is for the petrochemical drug industry and the medical profession for their high paid job security.
Mahalo,
Charlie
Pull your head out Charlie…fat is not the villain you claim. In fact your biggest enemy is insulin and serum glucose and that comes from carbohydrates. So go on your low fat crusade and get in line for CVD. Google the Cholesterol Code.

I am guessing the author has never woken up to pigs rooting in their yard. Unfortunately your view is unsustainable. Pigs will multiply until there is not enough food. Would the author want pigs dying of starvation at that point. We would be an island of pigs AND chickens. Chickens do not destroy the environment, pigs do.
Big difference in hunting for sport versus hunting for food. Hunters here are going after the pigs not only because they are invasive, but also because they are so tasty and can provide an assortment of food. I believe in a balanced diet which includes all meats, eggs, and vegetables as well. Everyone is free to eat what they prefer and it’s their own business. You want to live off twigs and berries go ahead. Just don’t lecture me when I eat bacon and eggs everyday.
If we do not control the pigs they will become like our chickens. Chickens do not destroy the environment with their food gathering, pigs do.
Utter nonsense, Terri. Man’s very nature is to hunt, we’ve been doing it for 250,000 years. Besides, plants are loaded with phytotoxins which compose over 98% of all pesticides residing in human bodies: see this… https://www.acsh.org/news/2017/06/13/9999-pesticides-we-eat-are-produced-plants-themselves-11415
Plant proteins are incomplete, so the human body needs meat to be completely healthy.

Wait, I’m confused RG. According to evangelicals and some Christians, the world was created around 10,000 years ago. 4 out of 10 Americans believe this: https://www.livescience.com/46123-many-americans-creationists.html So how can man have been hunting animals for 250,000 years if the world was only created 10,000 years ago? Are Evangelicals wrong or are you mistaken?
Anyone that thinks chickens are harmless are just as bad as refusing to realize pigs are bad for the environment. Both pig and chickens are very much a destructive force on Kauai… ask any farmer or home gardener
