PUHI — Kapaa swimmer Maddie Hoesel and Kauai swimmer Akira Williams led the field of swimmers who earned qualifying state standard swims Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying swim meet hosted by Island School at the YMCA pool where the new electronic timing system is installed.
The two individual qualifiers are joined by four relay teams — the Kapaa Girls 200 Medley Relay (2:08.72), the Kauai Boys 200 Medley Relay (1:52.87), the Kauai Boys 200 freestyle (1:42.45), and the Kauai Boys 400 freestyle (3:39.09) — that earned state qualifying swims at the meet that was delayed for a few hours due to traffic following an early morning auto accident.
Hoesel, swimming the lead leg of the Warrior 200 Medley Relay team, made her marks in the freestyle events, touching first on a swim of 2 minutes, 4.34 seconds in the 200 freestyle event, and picked up a state standard in the 100 freestyle where she stopped the clock at 57.18 seconds.
Williams, swimming also with the qualifying Boys 200 Medley Relay, and the Boys 400 freestyle relay teams, made his individual marks in the 100 butterfly where he was first on a 55.20-second swim, and in the 100 backstroke where he stopped the clocks at 57.97 seconds.
The next KIF qualifying meet will be hosted by Kauai High School at the YMCA pool Saturday where the first event hits the water at 10 a.m.
