WAILUA — Kapaa High School’s paddling teams took three first places, and Waimea High School’s teams tallied two first place finishes Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation paddling races at the Wailua River.
Kauai High School was limited to a win in the junior varsity girls division on a paddle of 4 minutes, 35.47 seconds, but with two more regattas remaining on the KIF calendar, controls the lead in the JV girls, varsity boys and varsity girls classes.
The Red Raiders are also strong contenders in the JV mixed division where it trails the Warriors by just a point — 16 points to Kauai’s 15 points. Kauai is clinging to its lead in the varsity girls against a strong challenge from the Warriors (16-15 points), and in the varsity boys classes where the Raiders are holding off a Waimea challenge, 16-14 points.
Kapaa, holding the lead in JV boys and JV mixed divisions, charged back with a win in the varsity girls (4:27:48) class to pull to within a point of the overall lead.
Waimea, controlling the lead in the varsity mixed division with a win on a 4:08.68 run, took a .25-second win over Kauai High School in the varsity boys class to stay in contention for the lead in that division.
The next KIF regatta starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wailua River.
