LIHUE — “I wanted pumpkin crunch but that was the first thing that sold out,” said Serena Valdez Thursday at Kauai Bakery in Kukui Grove Center. “I had to settle for pumpkin custard pie. I guess the next time I’ll order early.”
Valdez was one of the stream of customers picking up pie orders for Thanksgiving, having placed orders with Kauai Bakery owners Gracie Galiza and Guga Tosi earlier.
“We’re open,” Galiza said. “We got our finals clearances yesterday, the day for Thanksgiving. Last night, Roland Tacsiat, our baker, spent the night baking more than 300 pies to fill the orders. We even had time to do some of the more basic offerings like malasadas and turnovers.”
Thanksgiving was reserved for customers who had placed their pie orders ahead of time as well as the fortunate few who were able to snatch up the extra basic items put out for display in the front showcases.
Gracie Galiza said they got to the bakery around 6 a.m.
