WAILUA — The public is advised to remain out of the waters of Wailua River near Kuhio Highway, and also the coastal waters of Wailua Beach.
A wastewater discharge occurred Thursday evening at the intersection of North Leho Drive and Kuhio Highway. The discharge flowed along Kuhio Highway then into Wailua River in the vicinity of Kuhio Highway Bridge.
Crews have been working to repair the sewer line all weekend, and traffic has been snarled intermittently by roadway closures.
Warning signs have been posted along affected areas, and the public is advised to remain out of these waters until the signs have been removed.
Dr. Carl Berg of Surfrider’s Blue Water Task Force sampled the waters Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s results showed that Morgan’s Pond water was OK, but the shoreline north of the pond exceeded acceptable bacteria levels, and Wailua Beach Park was considered seriously polluted with fecal indicating bacteria.
Sunday’s results will be available today.
