LIHUE — Janice Bond, membership chair for the AARP, said the group is looking for at least 50 people, as quickly as possible.
More specifically, AARP is looking for younger members who would want to be leaders or officers of the AARP Kauai, Chapter 654.
A meeting will be held from noon to 1 p.m. today at the Moikeha Conference Room 1 for people interested in filling the official positions, or just interested in joining the group.
“This is a very important meeting,” Bond said. “During the funeral for Stu Burley, the AARP state president Gerry Silva announced a check for $250 to the Kauai Veterans Council was presented on behalf of Stu Burley. The funds are earmarked to dedicating the Nov. 3 Veterans Day Parade in Kapaa to Burley.”
Silva said Burley’s family will be marching with the AARP, Kauai Chapter, and people are needed to help carry the 10-foot banner with the AARP members.
“It is very important that we bring in younger people to this meeting,” Bond said. “There is a need for the Kauai chapter’s president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and legislative advocate. I am willing to train people, and for the positions of treasurer and legislative advocate, will introduce the positions that will require card changes and meetings to Oahu and the state legislature.”
AARP, Kauai chapter information will also be updated during this meeting.

I just discovered that AARP has canceled ‘silver sneakers’, a gym program to keep seniors healthier and away from expensive and painful medical treatments. So now, I am going to cancel my AARP membership. It appears that institutions are lowering themselves to the current administration’s attitudes and priorities.
