LIHUE — On the team’s homecoming, the Warriors totaled 347 yards rushing to win in a rout.

Kapaa High School’s varsity football team defeated Waimea High School, 59-6, Saturday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium.

Warriors senior running back Ryno Banasihan led Kapaa with 172 yards rushing on 10 carries including a 90-yard run for a touchdown on the team’s first play on offense.

Kapaa (4-2, 3-1 KIF) went into halftime with a 38-0 lead. The Warriors capped off the half with Banasihan scoring his second touchdown on a 24-yard run.

Waimea (1-5, 0-4 KIF) scored with seconds left in the game. Menehune junior quarterback Kawelo Huddy found the end zone on a 10-yard run. The ensuing two-point conversion failed.

Huddy’s score was set up by a 40-yard pass from senior quarterback Lacin Montemayor to junior running back Makoa Vanaman to get Waimea down to Kapaa’s 10-yard line.

Huddy was Waimea’s best offensive weapon, totaling 128 yards rushing on 20 carries including a 54-yard dash. Passing, Huddy was 2-8 for 21 yards.

Both Kapaa and Waimea were heavily penalized. Both combined for 30 penalties for minus 249 yards. Kapaa received the majority of penalties.

Waimea will next play Kauai High School (5-1, 3-1 KIF) on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. The junior varsity game will begin 12 p.m. and the varsity will follow.

Kapaa will play Kauai on Oct. 20 at Vidinha Stadium.
