BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — At least four people have reportedly been killed after an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit the Caribbean nation of Haiti late Saturday.
Three people died in the city of Port-de-Paix after their homes collapsed and a fourth person was reported dead in the town of Gros Morne, according to the news website Loop Haiti.
The quake struck 12 miles northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix at a depth of 9 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Buildings collapsed or were severely damaged in several towns, according to initial media reports, including the facade of a Catholic church which collapsed in the town of Plaisance du Nord.
The impoverished country was hit by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake in 2010 in which more than 220,000 people were killed.
Many Haitians are still living in emergency accommodation and the economic and political situation there remains fraught.
