It is a good thing the weather turned nice as Kauai Police Department officers Sgt. Clyde Caires, Sgt. Lance Okasaki and Sgt. John Mullineux, and Kauai Fire Department firefighters Jason Poloa and Abraham Moore take to the Walmart Lihue store rooftop for the annual Cop on Top fundraiser for Special Olympics that runs until Saturday afternoon.

“Someone should sing for them,” said Larry Rivera, who got out his ukulele and started playing for the three Kauai Police Department officers and two Kauai Fire Department firefighters at the Cop on Top fundraiser for Special Olympics at the Walmart store in Lihue.

Larry Rivera couldn’t resist digging out his ukulele and sound system from his Honda as he spied Kauai Police Department Sgts. Clyde Caires, Lance Okasaki and John Mullineux, and Kauai Fire Department Firefighters Jason Poloa and Abraham Moore, on top of the rooftop at the Walmart store Friday for the Cop on Top fundraising campaign that benefits Kauai Special Olympics (Coach Tamarine Carvalho said she could do the half marathon).

The Hawaii State Teachers Association members (James Yamamoto was recording the HSTA volunteer crews) were out in force with the Kauai Special Olympics athletes in soliciting donations for the program that serves people with intellectual disabilities through sports.

Clarence Sales of the Kauai Lynx said the weather created cancellations from off-island teams planning to participate in the Labor Day weekend basketball tournament. Instead, he will host a goodwill tournament Saturday and Sunday at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center to prepare teams for the Veterans Day Invitational tournament.

The weather continued to mess with schedules as Kauai High School athletic director Keli‘i Morgado joined parents at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery match at Island School (wasn’t it supposed to be at Kapaa?), but had to leave to tend to the girls volleyball game taking place at Kauai High School.

OK, have a safe weekend — it’s Kauai Marathon Sunday so watch for traffic advisories.
