Whether you are one year or 20 years away from retirement, it’s important that you think about and plan for your future.
Whether you are one year or 20 years away from retirement, it’s important that you think about and plan for your future.
That’s why AARP Hawai‘i is offering a “Think of Your Future” workshop on Kauai on Saturday, Sept. 8. Because before you stop working, you need to think about when to take Social Security, how to pay for health insurance and how to manage your money so you can choose how you live as you age.
Topics presented at the workshop include:
w Secure Your Financial Future. Review the different ways to save, invest and manage your money. An important part of securing your future includes figuring out how much money you’ll need to live a comfortable and healthy lifestyle as you grow older.
w Medicare 101. When you become eligible, you only have a seven-month window to sign up for Medicare, and it actually starts three months just before you turn 65. If you don’t sign up or are not covered a spouse’s employer, it can delay medical coverage and trigger unwanted penalties.
w Social Security. The decision on when to claim Social Security depends on your circumstances. However, people who claim the retirement benefit at age 62, will likely get 76 percent less money than if you wait to claim Social Security at age 70.
The workshops at the Lihue Public Library are free and you don’t have to be an AARP member to attend. There’s also no age limit or minimum. It runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
