PRINCEVILLE — The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas is proud to announce its 2018 recipients for its sixth annual scholarship program in support of the resort’s ohana.
Five children of associates at The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas received this year’s scholarship: Talia Abrams, Ariel Cummings, Hazel-Lyn Jarquio, Jordan Layaoen and Joshua Layaoen each received $1,000 to aid in the cost of pursuing higher education.
Abrams is enrolled at American University and is active in the School of Public Affairs’ leadership program, and she served as a 2018 summer intern for Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard in Washington, D.C. Abrams is interested in pursuing politics, law and community service to make changes in her community and the country. Abrams is the daughter of Meryl Abrams, Kids Club attendant.
Cummings is a senior at Grand Canyon University and plans to graduate with a bachelor’s of science in hospitality management. She aims to continue her education in the school’s Master in Business Administration program. Cummings is involved in intramural soccer, the Student Contact Center, Distributive Education Clubs of America and volunteer activities including Habitat for Humanity, Changing Lives Center and a 5K charity run. Cummings is the daughter of Lani Cummings, senior marketing services coordinator.
Jarquio is a senior at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and plans to graduate in 2019 with a bachelor’s of science in human development and family studies. She intends to continue her education through the school’s graduate entry program in nursing. Beyond the classroom, she is currently involved in the Student Equity Excellence and Diversity Fellowship, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and is a clinic clerk at University Health Services Manoa. Her father is Nato Jarquio, an associate in the Princeville Market.
Jordan Layaoen is enrolled at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and is studying mechanical engineering. He serves as a yearly volunteer with Special Olympics Hawaii and is a worship leader for church and music at his university. Upon graduation he hopes to either design automobiles for a major auto maker or design guitars.
Joshua Layaoen is a recent graduate of Kapa‘a High School and will attend Point Loma Nazarene University to earn a bachelor’s degree in business marketing or business. In high school, he was active in sports, including soccer and track, and his volunteer activities included tutoring first graders, assisting in disaster relief efforts in Hanalei and volunteering in church. Jose Layaoen, Jr. is a member of the resort’s engineering department and is Jordan and Joshua Layoen’s father.
The annual scholarship funds are raised through year-round, resortwide efforts by The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas associates as part of its commitment to the community. Associates, children and grandchildren of resort associates are eligible to apply for the yearly educational scholarship.
