The Waimea Alumni and Friends Foundation presented 15 scholarships to 14 outstanding members of Waimea High School’s Class of 2018.
• Kari Makenna Correa, daughter of Kiki and Michelle Correa, is the recipient of the first Misae Tokushige Takanishi Memorial Scholarship as well as a WAFF Golf Tournament Scholarship. She will be attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she will major in education with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. She is an outstanding combination of scholar, leader and athlete, and has devoted countless hours in community service.
• Son of Blaine and Ginny Agena, Corey Agena is the recipient of the Kiyoto Fujita Scholarship. He will be attending the University of California at St Luis Obispo with the goal of becoming a mechanical engineer. He is an exceptionally well-rounded student. He is involved in sports, school clubs, and volunteers in many community events. He is a class valedictorian. He is described as respectful and well-liked and is an excellent role.
• Recipient of the Kaoru & Kikumi (Nakaue) Fujita Endowed Scholarship is Anna L Broyles, daughter of Michael and Julie Broyles. She will be attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner in pediatrics. She has been recognized for her scholarship, leadership and volunteerism with certificates and medals. She has devoted hours to Peer Mediation, Cyber Bullying and Suicide Prevention, and student government.
• Daughter of Jimmy and Susana Grande is Apryl Joy Grande. She is the recipient of a WAFF Golf Tournament Scholarship and will be attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with plans to become a practical nurse specialist. An all-around individual, She is a scholar, multi-sport athlete and student leader and has demonstrated above-average leadership capability.
• Chaminade University of Honolulu with the goal of becoming a registered nurse is the school of choice of Leilani Higashi, daughter of Blanche Higashi. She takes her education very seriously by challenging herself, taking the early college courses to earn both high school and college credits. In addition, she is the primary caregiver for her grandfather, transporting him to appointments, doing basic first aid and housekeeping.
• Kekoa Kimata-Lopez, son of Timmy Lopez and Janis Kimata, will be attending Kauai Community College with the goal of becoming an auto mechanic. His special talent is long-distance running. Since the age of three, he has won numerous races and age divisions from 2K to the half marathon. He also ran the Honolulu Marathon at age 15. As a high school student, Kekoa has participated on the soccer, track and cross country teams, qualifying for the state cross country Meet last year.
• With a goal of becoming an Emergency Room Physician, Braden K.H. Kobayashi, son of Jon and Leila Kobayashi, will be attending Creighton University in the fall. He is the recipient of the Daniel Suga Memorial Scholarship. Extremely well-rounded, he is outstanding in academics, sports, leadership and community service.
• Joshua Ochua, son of Dante and Lorena Ochua, is still unsure about what university he will attend in the fall but will be working toward earning a degree in civil engineering. A disciplined athlete, he is a 4-year cross country and a 2-year tennis team member. He credits cross country with teaching him to be mentally and physically focused, applying those disciplines in his studies.
• Seeking a liberal arts degree with plans to major in a medical field, Jayda Oyamot-Campos, daughter of Bradyn and Jonay Campos will be attending Kauai Community College in the fall. Her work ethic has earned Honor Roll status throughout her high school years and she graduates with CTE Honors.
• Dino K. Pabre, Jr., son of Dino K. and Lisa B. Pabre, is the recipient of the Martha Kruse Memorial Scholarship. He will be attending Loyola Marymount College but hopes to return to Waimea High School as a teacher. He has demonstrated remarkable dependability, emerging not only as an exceptional student but as an active participant in the community at large.
• Recipient of the George and Doris Memorial Scholarship is Jason Pagtolingan, son of Zenaida Valecia and David Carineo. He will be attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to study business with an emphasis in finance. He wants to gain experience in hospital administration, then return to Kauai and serve as a hospital administrator at one of our hospitals and bring quality health care to the people .
• Tiana Rita, daughter of Russell S. Rita and Stefanie Gerardo will be attending Johnson and Wales University in Denver which has an impressive culinary program. After finishing school, she plans to travel the world to experience new cultures and new recipes. Her ultimate goal is to be an executive baker and pastry chef or open her own bakery.
• With plans to become a pharmacist, Carla Mae Satumba, daughter of Danilo and Melinda Satumba will be attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo in the fall. Despite having to make many adjustments after moving to Hawaii from the Philippines when she was only 6, she has managed to work diligently in her studies.
• Another WAFF Golf Tournament scholarship recipient is Kelsey Tomimoto, daughter of Kent and Sallie Tomimoto. She will be attending the University of San Diego, majoring in biology with the intent of becoming a physician. She hopes to return to Kauai to give back to the community that inspired her.
