LIHUE — Since May 21, there are 39 bow hunters permitted to hunt wild pigs on Nounou Mountain, also known as Sleeping Giant, and six pigs have been reported harvested.
The popular hiking area is being opened to archery hunting on a trial basis only in order to control the wild pig population.
The trial will last for six months, until Nov. 30. After that the results will be assessed, with the potential to keep the area opening for hunting.
Hunters got permits after attending a mandatory Department of Land and Natural Resources safety and briefing meeting.
“You have to go to the meeting where they explain the boundaries and safety procedures,” said Robert Cremer, Kauai representative on the state Game Management Advisory Commission.
“The number of people that showed up and were interested was 39, so they gave out 39 permits and are going to keep it at that for at least two months.”
If there’s interest once those two months pass, another meeting will be held to allow more interested people to earn hunting permits.
The idea was introduced in a February DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife meeting attended by about 40 people.
Everyone participating in the trial hunt is required to follow all established hunting laws. Archers are allowed to hunt every day with a two pigs per hunter, per day limit.
Hunting is regulated by the existing state hunting rules, including the hours, which are from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset.

Do these 39 hunters use un-leashed dogs to hunt down their prey on Nounou? Would like to know if we will be running into lost hunting dogs when we’re walking our leashed dogs on the trails.
With all the homeless in need of food, these hogs would make great pork chops, smoked meat, pork adobe and of course, Vinadosh with onions, shoyu and vinegar!
