HONOLULU — Island School elementary students were honored on May 5 at the annual Young Artists of Hawaii Art Exhibition at the Hawaii State Art Museum in Honolulu.
The students honored included kindergartners Elise Lawhon and Alana Ryan, first-graders Colten Manibog and Ryder Vivas, second- grader Lilia Akuna and fifth-grader Nohea Judd. They were the only recipients from Kauai, accompanied by their art teachers, Penny Nichols and Becky Snowden.
The annual YAH exhibition was established by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to recognize and display student artwork. It recognizes creative excellence among Hawaii’s public and private students in kindergarten through sixth-grade.
This year’s theme, “My Culture, My Family and Me,” was intended to inspire students to express how they feel, see or interpret their lives in the islands. Schools throughout the state were invited to submit artwork, and judges selected 96 works for exhibition.
Their works of art will be on display on the second floor of the Hawaii State Art Museum through June 29.
A replica of the 2018 YAH Art Exhibition will be on display in the Pa Kamalii Courtyard on the third floor of the Hawaii Convention Center through March 2019.
