Among the representatives from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, three from Waimea High School advanced to the Round of 16.
The 2018 HMSA Tennis Championships began Thursday at the Central Oahu Regional Park.
In the girls singles bracket, Waimea’s Kari Correa won her opening round match against Emily Thai of McKinley, 6-0, 6-0. Correa, though, was defeated by No. 1 seed Alyssia Fossorier of Punahou in the Round of 16, 6-0, 6-0.
Also in the girls singles bracket, Kauai’s Anna Burkman lost to Casydee DeMattos of Hilo in the first round, 6-2, 6-0. Kapaa’s Sheela Nair lost to Josette Huang of Punahou in the first round, 6-0, 6-0.
In the boys doubles bracket, cousins Limar Medina and Edmelle Medina of Waimea won their opening round match against Xander Santa Cruz and Jacob Pagdilao of Campbell, 7-6 (6), 6-3. The Medinas, though, lost in the Round of 16 against No. 5 seed Shane Yee and Tyler Ikehara of Punahou, 6-0, 6-0.
Also in the boys doubles bracket, Kauai’s Chris Constantino and Nick Badua lost in the opening round to No. 6 Everett Fan and Cade Fujitani of Punahou, 6-1, 6-0. Kapaa’s Kevin Dang and Christian Lopez lost in the opening round to Koby Kosaki and Colby Kudo of Waiakea, 3-6, 3-0 (dq).
In the boys singles bracket, Island School’s Sasha Rovinsky was defeated by No. 4 seed Andrew Yip of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama in the opening round, 6-2, 6-0. Waimea’s Wendell Batangan was also defeated in the opening round by Luke Hamano of Hilo, 6-0, 6-1.
In the girls doubles bracket, Kauai’s Mari Kanna and Callie Parsons lost in the opening round to Moanalua’s Sydney Chun and Anna Matsunaga, 6-1, 6-1. Kauai’s Hokulani Iseri and Katherine O’Neill, too, lost in the opening round to Jessica Griffiths and Olivia Hoekstra of Seabury Hall, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
The tournament continues today and will be played through Saturday.
