WAILUA — The Kauai Senior Softball League rolled into week nine with triple-headers at the Wailua Houselots Park and at Wally Sonoda Senior Field in Kaumakani.
Hits and scoring was the call of the day at the Houselots Park hosted by Kawaihau. The explosive offenses put 44 runs on the scoreboards in all of the games with two knock out contests — a game may be called after five innings should one of the teams have a 12 -run advantage.
Barteks brought the big bats to the first game and hammered Kawaihau, 15-1. The triumph keeps Barteks in the league race at just a couple games off the pace. In the following game, East Kauai Legends’ veteran offense came through and ran away with a 10-4 victory over Da Kruzers.
The Keonimana Gents continued their streak atop the standings with their eighth consecutive win. The Gents powerful line-up got the jump in the scoring department and used their defense to take down the Hanamaulu Hillsiders, 13-1.
A capacity crowd filled the Wally Sonoda Senior Field for the triple-header in Kaumakani.
Both the Rookies and Kuku’s Aces, who call the Sonoda Park home, opened the day of games up against each other. The Aces scrapped and fought but could not hold off the relentless hitting as the Rookies racked up a 12-0 shutout in the bottom of the fifth. The Rookies boosted their record to 8-0 and remain in a first place tie with the Gents.
The Aloha Kia Lihue A’s and Rebels met in the mid match. After scoring three times in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6, the A’s posted two more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. The Rebels started the home half with back-to-back doubles and used a shallow fly ball to pull the game out with two runs in the home half to earn a 9-8 victory.
The Islanders and West Kauai put on the best show of the games. The Islanders were playing with a 10-man roster and no substitutes. The seesaw battle covered the scoreboard with runs including three five-run innings for each of the teams. The Islanders held on for an 19-18 win.
St. Patrick’s Day will find the Senior League taking to the fields at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex softball diamond and the compact old school ballpark at Eleele Stadium. In Kapaa, Da Kruzers take on the Islanders in the first game. Kawaihau and Hanamaulu will follow, and the final game will feature the East Kauai Legends up against the Keonimana Gents.
Ohana will play host to the Rebels to open the games in Eleele Park. West Kauai, on their home field, will square off in the mid morning matchup with Kuku’s Aces. The day will cap off with an encounter between Barteks and the Aloha Kia Lihue A’s. Both teams need a win to stay in the league race.
The games first pitch is slated for 9 a.m. with the following games at 10:15a a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
