POIPU — March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is hosting the fourth annual Bum Run on March 10 at 4 p.m. to heighten knowledge of the second-most common form of cancer in the U.S.
After a number of colleagues were diagnosed a few years ago, the entire resort rallied to support the cause to raise awareness, encourage regular screenings and know one’s family history.
“We had another colleague diagnosed last year, so we want to continue to raise awareness and get people out for screenings,” said Diann Hartman, director of public relations. “Following the first Bum Run, screenings locally went up over 20 percent that year.”
“It’s a fun way to spend an hour or two on a beautiful course which many, unless they golf, don’t ever see,” Hartman added. “It’s a good opportunity to get out, get moving and support a good cause. More than 500 people have participated in the past, including many visitors to the island.”
The Bum Run is a fun run/walk/stroll around the front nine holes on Poipu Bay Golf Course, about 3 miles. The event is not timed; kids and strollers are welcome.
In addition to the walk/run, there will be educational aspects as well as prizes and more.
The silent auction will include stays at Hyatts in San Francisco, Scottsdale, La Jolla, San Antonio, Maui and Seattle; island activities, dining, jewelry and more. Proceeds go to support the American Cancer Society on Kauai.
Registration for the Bum Run is $30 for adults, $15 for ages 6-17 and kids 5 and under are free. Teams of four or more receive a 10 percent discount.
Online registration is available on Active.com; just search for “bum run” or “koloa.”
Registration on the day of the event will take place from 3-3:45 at the Poipu Bay Golf Clubhouse. Fees are an additional $5 the day of the event.
