WAILUA — Bryden Salvador, a 2015 graduate of Kapaa High School and a member of the Warrior golf program, will be among the field of the 42nd annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament when the first round opens Thursday at Wailua Golf Course.
Including the host University of Hawaii, the 20-team field includes five teams ranked in the Top 50, including No. 4 Texas A&M who captured the 2009 Burns championship.
Virginia, winning last year’s Burns Intercollegiate by edging out Texas A&M by four strokes, returns to defend its title.
“This is a good day for the practice round,” said Danny Walker of Virginia. “We’ve been here for two days and getting a good feel of the course.”
Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M will also be on the course to defend his individualist crown.
“The course is in good shape,” Phillips said Tuesday as he came off his practice round, “The course is a little wet, but there’s no rain. It beats the weather we’re having back home. I’ll probably play the same mindset as last year and hope it is the best play I can do. My mindset helped because it I had good play for the season. If I can do that, I’ll accomplish my goal, and hopefully be good enough to make the Palmer Cup.”
During the tournament, golfers will play a total of 54 holes over a three-day span starting Thursday and running through Saturday on the 6,991-yard, par 72 course with golfers leaving on a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. each day.
Other teams participating in the three-day tournament include No. 24 North Carolina, No. 32 Brigham Young, No. 42 Saint Mary’s, No. 45 University of Nevada Las Vegas, No. 53 Arizona, No. 55 UNC-Wilmington, No. 60 Virginia, No. 72 Washington State, No. 78 Utah, No. 86 New Mexico, No. 98 UTEP, No. 100 Grand Canyon, CSUN, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Northern Colorado, University of California Irvine, University of California Santa Barbara, and host University of Hawaii.
This is the second tournament during the fall season, UH golf has hosted on Kauai, the first one being the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitation.
There is no charge to view the competition.
