KOLOA – Firefighters responded to a brush fire near a residential area in Koloa on Monday afternoon.
No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.
Multiple units were dispatched to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. to find about half-acre of land burning behind Tapa Street and Weliweli Road in Koloa.
Firefighters from the Koloa fire station were first on scene, and were soon assisted by personnel from the Kalaheo fire station. The fire was under control about 3:20 p.m. and fully extinguished shortly after.
The fire originated after a resident began burning trash on a nearby property.
“Backyard burning of yard waste and household trash is prohibited in Hawaii,” said Fire Chief Robert Westerman. “If it weren’t for the quick actions of our firefighters, this preventable situation could have turned into a devastating outcome.”
