WASHINGTON — Partisan tensions were so high on the first day of the government shutdown that a House Democrat forced the chamber to vote on the question of whether a Republican poster depicting Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer violated House decorum rules.
The poster pictured Schumer, D-N.Y., with a comment he made in 2013 saying that a government shutdown “is the politics of idiocy, of confrontation, of paralysis.” Republicans were using it as a prop as they gave floor speeches seeking to blame Senate Democrats for the “Schumer shutdown.”
The decorum question, raised by Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., came under a House rule that says remarks in debate may include references to the Senate or its members but those references have to be confined to the question under debate, avoiding personality.
Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., who was presiding when the question was raised, ruled that the poster did not violate decorum. Perlmutter appealed the Womack’s ruling, but Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., moved to table his motion.
The House approved Cole’s motion to table 224-173, with a few Democrats joining Republicans in rejecting the stunt.
Fake tears shumer Shutdown! DACA is an immigration issue,it doesn’t have any place now in a Spending Bill! Loser democrats need to understand the community organizer is out of power! The hay days of corruption are Over for Now!
I think Schumer has made a terrible mistake. He is shutting down the government because of 700,000 DACA enrollees. I support DACA -and- the DREAM act (there are nearly 3,000,000 affected by the DREAM act, they aren’t the same thing), and I am sure that McConnell would never have done anything to resolve this issue since it is so beneficial for the Republican political campaigns.
Illegal Immigration appeals to voters who have been misled into thinking that undocumented workers are stealing “their jobs” but most often these are jobs Americans would not take anyway. (Why Americans don’t know what an H1B visa is remains a complete mystery. Those legal visa holders -ARE- taking your jobs — if you have a college degree.) The claim that undocumented workers cost taxpayers money is not confirmed by the facts. The driving factor in determining whether or not a given individual will “cost the government” is whether or not that individual has a high school diploma. An undocumented worker without a high school diploma who has lived in the USA from 18 to 75 “costs” about $22,000. An American citizen without a HS diploma “costs” nearly 100 times as much.
Perhaps we should consider deporting anyone without a HS diploma?
But this is a nuanced issue that few people understand and so few people are going to support Schumer’s folly.
If one wants to guess why Schumer made this choice, one should also consider Schumer’s support for Israel. He turns a blind eye to the fate of the Palestinians. Surely they deserve as much compassion as those who depend on DACA. There are any number of other minority groups that could be compared to DACA recipients. This failure to do so seems so hypocritical. Surely Schumer knew his shutdown, based solely on the DACA claim, is going to fail.
One “conspiracy theory” that makes sense to me is that Schumer wants to destroy the Democratic Party.
Well, this is probably too strongly worded, since he really only wants to destroy a portion of the Democratic Party. You know, the one that includes those who voted for Bernie Sanders as President. (70% of voters in the Democratic Primary chose Sanders. 8 of 10 Super Delegates, including Hirono and Schatz, ignored that choice and voted Clinton at the convention.) The one whose supporters Tom Perez kicked out of any leadership positions in the DNC. The one that is anti-war. The one that supports BDS, Boycott Divestment and Sanctions against Israel. If any true morality were to arrive in the Democratic Party, Schumer (and Pelosi and Obama and Hirono and Schatz) knows his leadership position would be lost.
When the “Schumer Shutdown” fails because of the narrow focus on the DACA push, Schumer will loudly say, “See, I told you so! You Berniecrats need to go sit down. Americans don’t care about income inequality, war, pollution, or global warming.” Schumer solidifies his position in the party and can continue the expansion of the American Empire. And in 2020, Hillary can run again.
Great Kabuki Theater.
