WAILUA — Mia Pauletto, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation league official for paddling, is crossing her fingers that all goes well next Saturday for the KIF paddling championships.
Following a traffic snarl generated by Saturday’s auto accident and then a false missile alert, the KIF paddling regatta started at 1 p.m. instead of the 9 a.m. scheduled start time to accommodate teams trying to get to the Wailua River site.
Following the results of the Saturday regatta, which saw Kapaa take three of the six races — the junior varsity girls, the varsity girls and the varsity mixed — the Warriors hold the lead heading into the championship regatta.
First finishes in the junior varsity girls with acommanding time of 4 minutes, 37.23 seconds, and in the varsity girls race (4:17.79), preserve the Warriors undefeated status in those two divisions.
Waimea, finishing first in the JV boys and JV mixed divisions, are strong challengers in the varsity girls division, where the Menehune strokers crossed the line on a 4:18.26 run behind Kapaa. Waimea also preserves undefeated records in the JV boys and JV mixed classes.
Kauai High School paddlers made their mark in the varsity boys class when its crew broke the four-minute mark, crossing on a 3:58.04 run, an improvement over its previous best 4:07.09 recorded during the preliminary and qualifying heats.
The Voyagers from Island School reached the finals in the varsity boys and varsity mixed divisions, bettering their preliminary runs in both divisions.
The KIF championship regatta starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, barring any unforeseen circumstances, at the Wailua River.
