PUHI — Kauai Community College student Michael McEvoy dreams of attending the Culinary Institute of America in New York City.
And now the Island School graduate’s chances are a bit better because KCC’s Culinary Arts Program has received accreditation.
“There’s always something valuable to learn at KCC,” McEvoy said.
The honor comes from the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission. It allows students to receive one of two certifications: Certified Culinarian or Certified Pastry Culinarian — both highly valued certifications in the food industry, according to a press release from KCC.
“This certification means that the student has the skills and knowledge needed to begin a career without additional testing,” said Martina Hilldorfer, KCC Culinary Arts Program co-coordinator and chair of the accreditation process.
A site visit preceded the accreditation, and KCC’s program drew special attention for top quality meals. The commission showcased the program at its July convention in Orlando.
“Our faculty and staff have created a signature well-founded, well-rounded and impressive culinary arts program,” said KCC Chancellor Helen Cox. “They assure that our students have the foundation to succeed in their field upon graduating.”
The program annually accepts 17 to 22 students, who earn associate of arts degrees.
