KALAHEO — Geographic boundary changes in the Kalaheo area will go into effect for school year 2019-20.
The change will result in more students enrolling at Waimea Canyon Middle and Waimea High schools.
“Boundary lines are being established based on the population changes in the area, which has in part, resulted in lower enrollment at Waimea High,” wrote Donalyn Dela Cruz, director of communications for the state Department of Education.
“This new established boundary line will only affect families living in the Kalaheo community area,” Dela Cruz wrote. “It will not affect the families in Lawai and Omao.”
The DOE’s Kauai Complex Area will hold the following community meetings for affected families and employees:
w Tuesday, 6 p.m., Kalaheo School cafeteria
w Thursday, 5 p.m., Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School cafeteria
w Friday, 5:30 p.m., Kauai High School, room R-3
“It is imperative that we work together to meet the needs of this change and support the transition for all affected families,” said Billa Arakaki, Complex Area superintendent. “Our Kauai Complex Area believes in the unique strengths and potential of each and every student in our schools. We are committed to ensuring equity and excellence for all students to successfully discover and embark upon their chosen path in life.”
Dela Cruz said the current boundary line for families residing in the Kalaheo community is located between Halewili Road and Kua/Koloa roads.
Historically, students from these families have had the choice to attend Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and Kauai High School, or Waimea Canyon Middle School and Waimea High School.
“The department is now establishing boundary lines that have not existed before,” Dela Cruz wrote.
The new boundary line will be Kua Road (mauka of the traffic light) and Koloa Road. Families residing on the west side of Kua and Koloa Roads will be attending WCMS and WHS.
Students residing on the east side of Kua and Koloa roads will be attending CKMS and KHS.
