What a crazy Friday the 13th! An early morning phone call from Sue Kanoho started the day with reports of a pilot whale stranding (kudos to Padraic Gallagher of the American Red Cross for worrying about the volunteers dehydrating!) at Kalapaki Beach. For a lot of the keiki, they were able to get in on the excitement because of fall break (yes, the Dennis Agena basketball clinic was over!), and County Councilmember Derek Kawakami and Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. (Sarah Blane was busy distributing water to volunteers and getting her clothes wet) came to check out the rare situation. TGI reporter Jessica Else found out that cars have a way of giving trouble when you need to respond on a dime, but thank heaven for friends who can pull off miracle repairs. Kudos to the Kauai Police Department (yes, Deputy Chief Michael Contrades got the early morning call, too), the Kauai Fire Department (it’s Fire Prevention Week and the recruit class had an unforgettable experience), and the Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau for limiting casualties to the stranded pilot whales.
Meanwhile, Carolyn Lum and her Friends of the Lihue Public Library were busy with the fall used book sale (it continues today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and mahalo to Susan Matsunaga for the avos), where Terry Phillips was able to find some deals during lunch. Lani Kawahara of the Kapaa Public Library said they’ve got their sale continuing Sunday from 9 a.m., too (maybe Isobel Storch of the Friends of the Kapaa Public Library will find some deals for Florrie Toyofuku, who is now in preschool).
