FILE – In this March 2, 1945, photo, Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, left, takes time out to rest with Bob Campbell, right, a Marine from San Francisco, in front of a large Japanese gun knocked out by Marines at the base of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. Rosenthal scaled the mountain to make the picture of the U.S. flag being raised there. On Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, which would have been Rosenthal’s 106th birthday, a group will deliver their petition with over 2,000 signatures and a letter requesting a future USS Joe Rosenthal to Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer, who is responsible for naming ships. Rosenthal took the iconic Iwo Jima flag raising photo. (AP Photo, File)
