KAPAA — The dog that injured two other dogs on the Eastside in June is no longer a danger to the community, according to officials from the Kauai Humane Society.
Makaleha, the dog in question, was turned over to KHS for euthanasia after attacking two Kapaa pets. Makaleha allegedly attacked an airedale mix at Marine Camp in Wailua, resulting in severe injuries. That dog made a full recovery, according to KHS officials.
The second attack reportedly occurred at Kealia Beach when an unleashed Makaleha attacked Kona, a 9-year old, miniature chocolate, longhaired dachshund, putting him in an animal hospital on Oahu.
Kona remains paralyzed and is under the care of the veterinary staff at Kapaa Animal Clinic, said Scott Pisani, executive director of KHS.
The handler at the time of both incidents, Rebecca Au was charged with two dangerous-dog violations and two leash-law violations. Her case is moving through the state court system.
Dangerous dog inquiries can be best addressed by sending in a photo of the person and pet in question to firstname.lastname@example.org.
