Kalaheo residents Tiffany Rae and Theresa Della Lana captured the 3.5 Women’s Doubles title during the Second Annual Huntington Beach Surf City Pickleball tournament which wrapped up over the weekend in California.
Rae and Della Lane, representing the Kalaheo Pickleball ‘Ohana Club, rose to the top following 14 games against five opponents over the course of six hours, said Jack Hodges, the USA Pickleball district ambassador.
Opponents to the Kalaheo pair included Laguna Nigel, Calif., San Luis Obispo, Calif., Manhattan Beach, Calif., Reno, Nevada and Honolulu.
Undefeated entering the finals, the Rae and Della Lana pair faced a team they had beaten in the double-elimination tournament with an 11-5, 11-5 score.
However, the Kalaheo team lost the finals in a best-of-three match, 5-11, 12-10 and 6-11, to force another match. Rae and Della Lana took the final match for the title, 15-9.
Hodges said the skill level tournament with brackets ranging from 3.0 to 5.0 and featuring 240 players is the largest California pickleball tournament to date.
