Haena Beach shut by shark sighting

HAENA — Ocean Safety officials closed Haena Beach to swimming Saturday until further notice due to a shark sighting.

Lifeguards reported that a 4-foot blacktip reef shark was sighted off shore shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

As a safety precaution, Ocean Safety officials advised no swimming until further notice. Signs have been posted to warn beachgoers of the shark sighting.

Lifeguards will reassess the area this morning to determine if the beach can be reopened.
