Call in for disaster prep

LIHUE — Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard will host a telephone town hall at 4 p.m. Monday on hurricane and disaster preparedness.

She will be joined by Elton Ushio of Kauai Emergency Management Agency, Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Administrator Vern Miyagi, Anna Foust of Maui Emergency Management Agency,Talmadge Magno of Hawaii Island Civil Defense Agency, and Melvin Kaku of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management.

They will answer questions from the community, discuss the forecast for the upcoming hurricane season, and review new recommendations that Hawaii residents prepare an “emergency kit” with a minimum of 14 days of food, water and other supplies. Hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov. 30.

“We are so fortunate to live in Hawaii, but we have some seasonal disasters that are unique to our islands, and it’s important to be prepared,” Gabbard said. “With hurricane season kicking off this month and running through November, I’m hosting a telephone town hall meeting with emergency management leaders in each of our counties to talk about how Hawaii families can prepare and stay safe.”
