LIHUE — It’s not often the sounds of George Gershwin, one of America’s greatest composers, are played live by a symphonic ensemble, particularly on Kauai. But what isn’t out of the ordinary were the impressive performances from some of Kauai’s best young talent on stage.
Kauai Performing Arts Center put on another impressive showing Thursday night at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall with its latest production, “Nice Work If You Can Get It!” directed by Dennis McGraw.
Featuring some of Gershwin’s greatest hits, the show made the audience laugh and cheer with outstanding performances from Kane Casillas, playing Jimmy Winter, Nialani Green, playing Billie Bendix, and the exceptional humor of the “butler,” Rafael Sifuentes, playing Cookie McGee.
For moments at a time, you would forget you were watching high school students on stage, as the acting, singing and choreography left the audience in awe, with a very deserving standing ovation at the conclusion of the show.
I would be remiss in not mentioning the supporting cast of the play, who each played pivotal roles in the plot of the play, including Grace Yatsko, who stole the stage with her voice in the role of Estonia Dulworth.
There are two more opportunities to see some of Kauai’s most talented teenage performers, at 7 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.
General admission is $12 and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the door.
