Hawaii has been referenced in Korean cinema for years. Before the implementation of the Visa Waiver Program for South Koreans, travel to the U.S. was difficult and costly. This was reflected in the psyche of South Koreans, making Hawaii even more of an unreachable paradise.
A most notable reference to Hawaii is in the 2001 film “Friend,” where icon actor Dong Gun Jang tells his gangster counterpart, “ni ga gara … Hawaii” meaning: “you go to Hawaii,” as he tried to protect his friend from gangsters.
In 2016, another film, “Train to Busan,” a zombie action film takes place on a fast train from Seoul to Busan. Seok-woo (played by Yoo Gong), a fund manager, takes his daughter Su-an to see his ex-wife in Busan as her birthday wish. The zombie outbreak hits all parts of Korea, with the city of Busan as the last haven for humans. Su-an and a surviving pregnant mother are in the final scene walking in a tunnel to safety when they are under the scope of a military sniper. Ordered to kill but the sniper holds fire as Su-an starts singing “Aloha ‘Oe” in Korean, which saves their lives.
